PPNSG members have been carrying out Traditional Hedgelaying for 9 years as part of their care for the Local Nature Reserve and encouragement of all wildlife. Hedgelaying is a method of hedgerow management to encourage growth from near the base of the trees. Undertaken during winter when the sap is down, the hedgerow is first trimmed back.

Next, each bush is partially cut through at the base. This allows the stem to be bent over, whilst still attached, and supported by stakes hammered into the ground. This process is repeated making a dense barrier about 4 feet high which, because each stem is still attached, springs into leaf come April.

Volunteers are most welcome. No previous skills are required – all equipment and training provided. The group meets on a Saturday morning Autumn to Spring.
